MCCM Trial Lawyers Selected for Super Lawyers List
Aug 16, 2013
Kevin S. Cooman and Peter J. Weishaar were chosen for inclusion on the 2013 New York Super Lawyers - Upstate list, an honor reserved for those lawyers who have shown excellence in practice. Only five percent of the attorneys in New York each year are named to the Super Lawyers list. Super Lawyers is a rating service of outstanding lawyers from more than 70 practice areas who have attained a high degree of peer recognition and professional achievement.
For over 30 years Kevin has engaged in a broad-based civil litigation practice, handling cases from intake through full appellate practice before the highest courts in New York State and the federal court system. These cases have included major and precedent-setting litigation in the fields of: general contract and commercial claims, health care, trademark, civil rights, Freedom of Information entitlements, personal injury, employment discrimination, securities and consumer fraud, tax, banking, education and construction.
In 2012, Kevin and the litigation team successfully completed the long-running Beechwood v Leeds litigation in federal court, obtaining a $25 million settlement from the State of New York, after five current and former members of the New York State Department of Health were found liable by the jury for unconstitutional retaliation against a skilled nursing facility and its owners. This is believed to be among the largest civil case settlements ever obtained against the State.
Peter's practice primarily focuses on complex commercial and business litigation matters, including the representation of businesses and individuals in litigation involving trade secrets, restrictive covenants, non-compete agreements, and other business disputes. His litigation practice includes the ongoing representation of businesses and individuals in state and federal trial and appellate courts across a broad spectrum of civil litigation matters, including contract and business disputes, labor and employment matters, construction, land use, banking, health care, civil rights and personal injury matters.
After being appointed pro bono to represent a prisoner in a civil rights case that was already pending in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of New York, Peter obtained verdict in favor of his client against two corrections officers. The jury determined that the two defendants violated the Eighth Amendment rights of Peter’s client by failing to protect him from a violent assault by another inmate.
Both Kevin and Peter have also achieved the "AV® Preeminent™" rating through Martindale Hubbell's peer review process. See www.martindale.com/ratings. AV® Preeminent™ is a certification mark of Reed Elsevier Properties Inc., used in accordance with the Martindale-Hubbell certification procedures, standards and policies.
