Did you ever wonder what made us decide to become lawyers? Maybe you wondered what we do when we’re not practicing law? Welcome to the latest post from our “Get to Know Us” series, featuring different members of our MCCM team, where we answer those questions. Our next post features Spencer C. Malone.

Why did you become a lawyer?

From a young age, I had a deep interest in the law. It always fascinated me how laws shape society and influence people’s lives. Initially, I entered undergraduate studies with the intention of pursuing a career in law enforcement. However, during my first legal course, where I learned about the court system and how it functions, I found myself drawn to the intricacies of legal reasoning and the role attorneys play in advocating for justice. That was the turning point when I realized that becoming an attorney was what I wanted to pursue. It felt like the perfect way to combine my passion for law with my desire to make a meaningful difference in people’s lives.

What do you do?

I concentrate my practice in the fields of estate planning and elder law, both of which require a unique mix of legal knowledge, empathy, and patience. Estate planning allows individuals and families to protect their assets, plan for the future, and ensure that their wishes are honored in the event of incapacity or death. I work closely with my clients to help them craft comprehensive and personalized estate plans that will safeguard their legacy and minimize potential conflicts down the road.

Another area of focus is elder law, where I assist clients with the complex legal issues that arise as they age, including nursing home transitions, Medicaid planning, and guardianships. These situations can be incredibly stressful, both emotionally and financially, for families. I find great fulfillment in guiding my clients through these challenges, offering clarity, legal expertise, and peace of mind as they make difficult decisions.

What work are you most proud of?

While every aspect of my practice is important, I am particularly proud of the estate planning work I do. It is incredibly rewarding to know that by helping clients draft their estate planning documents, I am providing them with a sense of security for both them and their families. Many clients come to me with concerns about the future, and I can help ease those concerns by creating a tailored plan that fits their needs. Whether it's ensuring a smooth transition of property, protecting loved ones, or providing for a charitable cause, seeing the relief on a client's face when their plan is in place is the most gratifying part of my job.

Tell us a little-known fact about you.

Outside of my legal practice, I enjoy traveling and exploring the United States by visiting national parks. My favorite trip so far was a road trip through Utah, where I had the opportunity to visit Arches, Bryce Canyon, Zion, Capitol Reef, and Canyonlands.
